Abstract:Termite predation by the ponerine antPachycondyla (= Termitopone) laevigata is regulated by a recruitment trail pheromone which originates from the pygidial gland and not, as previously assumed, from the hindgut. The pygidial gland opens between the 6th and 7th abdominal terga and is associated with a distinct cuticular structure which obviously serves as a glandular applicator.
