Abstract:An amount of FeO is usually retained in the high titanium slag during the electric furnace smelting of ilmenite for reducing the smelting temperature and keeping the slag fluidity. However, ferric sulfate formed during the production of titanium dioxide by the sulfuric acid method, resulting in the harmful effects such as high acid consumption. The effects of MgO on the physicochemical properties of high titanium slag were analyzed. Moreover, the feasibility of reducing the melting temperature of slag was investigated by FactSage thermodynamic analysis combined with electric furnace smelting experiments. The results show that increasing the MgO content and decreasing the FeO content have no apparent effect on the viscosity of titanium slag but can reduce the melting temperature. Besides, an increase of MgO in titanium slag is beneficial to mitigate the reduction of titanium oxides. Furthermore, with the increase of MgO content, the proportion of MgTi2O5 in anosovite solid solution increases. The results of the electric furnace smelting experiments confirmed that increasing MgO content from 6.6 wt% to 12.4 wt% can reduce the smelting temperature by 50℃. The main phase of the titanium slag is magnesium rich anosovite which has a good acidolysis performance. Therefore, it is beneficial to the subsequent production of titanium dioxide by the sulfuric acid process.
