| Abstract: | Thromboembolism is a major complication for patients undergoing elective hip and knee surgery. It can delay full recovery and increase the cost of treatment. This review article focuses on the pathophysiology, risk factors, and methods of prophylaxis in this select patient group. Emphasis is placed on the role of the nurse in the ongoing assessment of the patient's risk for thromboembolism. |
