VSAT networks in India—specifications and applications

A. K. Ghose received his Bachelor's degree in Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, from where he also received a Post-graduate Diploma in U.H.F. and Microwave Engineering. He obtained his Doctorate in Engineering from Jadavpur University at Calcutta. He has over 27 years of experience, commencing his service with the Government of India in the Telecom Research Centre and Defence R&D Organization, where he worked on development of line-of-sight and Troposcatter communication systems. Subsequently, he worked on R&D projects with the Indian Telephone Industries Ltd. (ITI) at Bangalore. He has been involved in ITI Equatorial Satcom Ltd., a joint venture Company of ITI, right from its inception in 1987 and is currently its Managing Director. Several research and technical papers under his authorship have been published in India and abroad. He has actively participated in various national and international bodies in the field of telecommunications.

Abstract:This paper describes briefly the evolution of VSATs in India, including the existing and proposed networks and their applications. The salient specifications of the various types of VSATs are described. Some of the VSATs under advanced stages of development as well as those to be used in proposed networks due for implementation soon are also covered.
