Abstract: | The Solvent mixtures of acetone and ethanol (swelling agent) were selected for the preparation of cellulose acetate dialysis membranes using the solubility parameter concept. Increased concentration of ethanol or decreased concentration of cellulose acetate in the formulation resulted in membranes with higher dialysis rate constants but with decreased tensile strengths. The membranes prepared from 20 g of cellulose acetate per 100 ml of mixed solvent of 59.9 mole-% acetone and 40.1 mole-% ethanol were comparable to Cuprophane membrane but were better than those prepared by using formamide as a swelling agent. |
