An analysis on the scholastic discourse construction in A Historical Study of Western Rhetoric by Liu Yamen

A Historical Study of Western Rhetoric is a newly published book by Professor Liu Ya- meng, which examines the historical development of Western rhetoric as a discipline. The book dis- tinguishes itself from the other Western similar publications as the author placed himself within a cross-cultural context free of constraints imposed by Western political and ideological position, Euroeentrism and scholarly politics and formed conceptualization against the background of social, histor- ical and intellectual contexts. Dating back to the birth of rhetoric as a discipline in ancient Greece, the book covers the historical development of western rhetoric, which involves the major rhetoricians and their perspectives. The book＇s significance lies in dealing widely with the relation between rhetoric and philosophy, between rhetoric and religion, between rhetoric and ethics, between rhetoric and literary criticism, and between rhetoric and argumentation and the latest development of contemporary Western rhetorical studies.
