Abstract:An attempt has been made to modify the properties of poly(ethylene terephthalate)PET by forming PET/polyamide 6(PA 6) blends. Since PET and PA 6 are incompatible, an ionomer Surlyn 9020 was added as a compatibilizer. The effect of Surlyn 9020 on the compatibility and morphology of PET/PA 6 blends was studied by PLM, SEM, DMA, WAXD. It is shown that PET, PA 6 crystallizes respectively in the blending system. PLM, SEM, DMA showed the compatibility in the amorphous and crystalline region is improved by adding Surlyn. PLM and SEM also shows a noticeable morphological change in the blends on adding Surlyn, such as good interfacial adhesion, reduction in the particle size of dispersed phase and more uniform distribution. The highest compatibilization efficiency was obtained when the content of Surlyn was 6%.
