| Abstract: | Presents an obituary for Barbara Snell Dohrenwend, whose career coincided with and in fact led the growth of the interrelated fields of community psychology, health psychology, and a psychological epidemiology. Her work helped to focus these fields on their present interest in stressed people and the contexts of stress. Barbara Dohrenwend's work was marked by very special and direct caring about psychological suffering, accompanied by the clear conviction that scientific study could and should serve to alleviate suffering.
