Toxic Effects of Tetanus Toxin and Fragment AB on Goldfish

The toxic effects of tetanus toxin and its fragment AB on goldfish and mice were de-scribed.Tetanus toxin paralysed and killed the fish at a dose of 0.8ng whereas 26ug of fragment ABpurified by affinity chromatography,which caused flaccid paralysys and death in mice,was no effecton goldfish.Antibodies to either fragment C or AB could blocked the paralytic effect of whole toxin ongoldfish.The neuromuscular junction of goldfish was much more sensitive to the paralytic action of thetoxin than its central nerve system (CNS).The date indicated that tetanus toxin acted on the peripheralnerve system,while fragment AB had no effect on the neuromuscular junction.It is concluded thatbinding of the toxin is necessary for the neuromuscular blocking action of the toxin on goldfish.Thetoxic effect of fragment AB is on the CNS.
