Abstract: | Photosynthesis and respiration measurements were made at lake temperatures with Cladophora glomerata collected from the eastern basin of Lake Erie. Although water temperatures varied from 10°C in May to almost 25°C in July, neither photosynthesis nor respiration showed any general increase in rates, even though there were wide daily fluctuations. Starch levels were low during the period of rapid growth but then increased until the time of sloughing. These data suggest that photosynthesis and respiration in Cladophora temperature-adapt and that a negative energy balance is not the cause of the mid-summer die-off. |
