Abstract:Restoration of steel structures from the period from 1860 to 1940. In a first step a classified consideration of steel from 1860 to 1940 is performed in order to check the weld ability in principle. It was not possible to make a general statement on weldability for wrought iron frequently due to irregularly distributed lamellar slag inclusions. Mild steel, however, has been found to be weldable in selected areas of the profile cross‐section, i.e. in the rim outside the segregation zone. The rim outside the segregation zone to be subject to distribution. In order to evaluate the distribution of the rim outside the segregation zone those parameters were investigated, which affected the scattering of the distribution highly. By means of measurements on sections segregation zone and their scatter were determined. Due to the thickness of the rim outside the segregation zone, the selected manual arc welding method had to be adjusted in view of the depth of fusion penetration. Penetration values have been determined as a function of energy applied per unit length in laboratory tests. Based on a comparison between available thickness of the rim outside the segregation zone and the depth of fusion penetration values, the maximum energy input has been specified in view of a practical implementation. To analyse the feasibility of such a weld joint for cyclic loads, fatigue tests have been carried out on welded mild steel specimens. The results of number of cycles to failure are similar to those of current structural steel with the same notch base load and building component form. This has indicated that a successful welding of mild steel is possible.
