| Abstract: | The other name of Paifang is Chinese Archway (Pailou), which is special type branch of Chinese ancient architecture. Paifang originated from Hengmen and Huabiaozhu before in Qin Dynasty in ancient China. The present article offers a sketch of the origin and evolution of Pailou, a traditional Chinese architectural form like an archway. Typical extant Pailou forms in Hubei are also introduced to illustrate such topics of interest as structural principles, composition, function, categories, decoration, and building techniques of Pailou. |
