Abstract:The paper presents results of research on a simplified DC/AC hybrid circuit breaker named Hybrid Current Limiting and Interrupting Device (H . CLID) . Voltage drop across the main contact in the ON state is of the same order as in mechanical circuit breaker. However, current interruption and limitation are almost the same as in contacless thyristor circuit breaker with forced current commutation. The design of H . CLID has been simplified in comparison to hybrid circuit breaker that has to perform both making and breaking function. There in the H. CUD being reported is applied a "single shot" (replaceable contact). Thus the H . CLED operaters like a fuse.Two models of H . CLID were developed, a physical model rated 400A/380V AC and an industrial model rated 1600A. 500VDC. A set of experiments has been carried out on the H . CLID models. They covered the following items: AC current interruption in low voltage system within prospective current up to 75kA (RMS); AC/DC, ' arc killer' against disturbance arc in low voltage switchboards; DC current interruption in low voltage systems fed from generator or converter of practically non . limited level of prospective current; DC load current interruption in highly inductive circuit (constant current reactor).All the tests have proved that the H . CUD operation is arcless and disastrous effects of the short circuit currents including disturbance arc can be almost entirely eliminated.The preferable field of H . CLID application is "life protection" for low voltage AC/DC switchgear. The H . CLID can also be used as a fast acting protection against internal faults in diode and thyristor converters. That way the semiconductor fuses could be entirely eliminated from converter circuits.
