Abstract:In order to increase the use of the wind as energy source is essential to study the periodical patterns of the wind resources by means of high quality data obtained from measurement stations, specially configured to evaluate the energy available in the wind. The work presented in this paper shows the preliminary results of a network of ultrasonic wind sensors which were installed and operated by the Autonomous University of Yucatan. Located in the tropical region at Eastern of Mexico, the research zone have been studied previously just by means of wind data measured at local meteorological stations and observatories. The developed measurement network includes six stations with towers between 40 m and 50 m height located around an important region of the North side of the Yucatan Peninsula. The preliminary results have shown a highly directional behaviour of the winds with better wind resources in the sites located on the coastline.
