Influence of incipient rust on the pattern of the atmospheric corrosion of steel The corrosion pattern with continuous rust formation has been compared with the results obtained and accumulated at certain intervals during the same time from analogous specimens. It was found, firstly, that there is a critical value of SO₂ concentration and, secondly, that the existing rust is capable of keeping certain quantities of SO₂ away from the surface. The latter effect explains the flattening-out of the corrosion rate to constant values, as well as the fact that, in pure atmosphere, the stationary conditions are reached later than in an industrial atmosphere.
