Gazprom's domestic agenda takes second place to exports

Russia's Gazprom has announced plans to spend $1.2 bn on extending its gas distribution network across the country. Many areas are without natural gas despite the fact that Russia is by far the world's largest producer of gas ( see Table 5.2c ). Low domestic prices nevertheless mean that Gazprom's priority remains the export market. The company has just agreed to spend $5 bn on an export pipeline to Germany.
