Abstract: | A fracture mechanics approach has been used to predict the approximate extent of cracking in a prestressed concrete pressure vessel subject to overpressure. The stress intensity factor has been calculated by means of the crack closure work concept and finite element stress analysis for a range of crack lengths. By comparing these results with published pseudo fracture toughness data for concrete the extent of cracking has been predicted. |
