Abstract:The mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome remain unresolved. Antibody-dependent enhancement of infection has long been thought to play a central role; however, this remains unverified. The alternative hypothesis that virus variation, virulence and dynamics may account for severe dengue disease, particularly in children, should be considered.
