Abstract: | Summary Poly (N-vinyl imidazole) (PVIm) hydrogels were prepared by-irradiating binary mixtures of N-vinyl imidazole-water in a 60Co- source having 4.5 kGy/h doserate. These hydrogels were characterized with gravimetric andspectrophotometric studies. Hydrogels with equilibrium swellingratio of 600% in distilled water were used in the metal ionadsorption studies. The effects of pH, equilibration time, andinitial metal ion concentration were considered in batchequilibrium study on the chelation ofCu2+,Co2+,Cd2+, andPb2+ ions. Maximum metal ionadsorption were observed at pH=6.0. It has also been observedthat the amount of adsorbed metal ions decreased at lower pHsbecause of protonation of PVIm ring. |
