Abstract: | It is known that a reflectance spectrum for an optimal colour takes on the value 0 or 1 at every wavelength, with at most two transitions between those values. This article shows that any non‐optimal colour can be produced by a reflectance spectrum that takes on the value 0 or 1 at every wavelength, with at most four transitions. While the two‐transition optimal spectrum is unique, the four‐transition non‐optimal spectrum is not unique. |
