PHARMACOLOGICAL EFFECTS AND PHARMACEUTICAL APPLICATION OF CLAY MINERALS

Clay minerals have many excellent characteristics such as a large specific surface area, high porosity, good adsorbability or high adsorption capacity, and a good ion exchange capacity. They can be used as active components and accessories of drugs. They are widely applied to clinical treatment of illnesses including gastrointestinal maladies, urgent or chronic diarrhea, skin disorders and rheumatism. As the research of the properties of clay minerals and their curative effects has developed, clay minerals used as natural nonpoisonous medicine materials have gained increasing recognition. Through the review of the previous literature about clay-based medication and laboratory investigations, the characteristics, functions, pharmacological effects and clinic application of clay minerals are introduced and prospects for the application of clay minerals in medicine and the cosmetics industry are forecasted.
