Abstract:In this work conductive composites consisting of carbon black (CB) and poly(ethylene oxide) were prepared by solution mixing. The composites' resistance drastically changes in organic vapors so that the composites can be used as candidates for gas‐sensing materials. Owing to the different conduction mechanisms and solvent/composites interactions, the electrical response behaviors of the composites exhibit specific dependences on CB content and environmental temperature, which were only reported previously in a few instances. In addition, the rate of response was also correlated with solvent polarity, solubility, etc. The findings would help to understand the micromechanism of response of the composites and to improve the sensing performance as well. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
