Application of Pipe Bursting on Pipeline Replacement

Pipe bursting is a trechless process for replacing pipes by breaking them open from within, while a sleeve or a new pipe is simultaneously pulled in behind the bursting tool. Pipe bursting consists of a bursting tool which moves through the existing pipeline, applying radial forces to break open or split the pipe. A spreader device on the bursting tool pushes the fragments of pipe into the surrounding ground. A thin-walled sleeve is generally pulled into the newly formed bore directly behind the spreader. This sleeve, made of either push-fit PVC or butt-fused polyethylene, protects the product pipe from contamination by small quantities of lubricating oil present in the exhaust gases from the burster head. The sleeve also prevents the product pipe from being damaged by fragments of the old pipe in the surrounding ground. The pipe bursting technique can be used on most brittle pipes and is now widely used for water mains replacement. This system is used to install equivalent sized product pipes or, in favourable ground conditions, the new pipe can be up to 150% larger. A recent development is to pull the product pipeline directly behind the bursting tool. A flexible protective sheath within the product pipeline acts as a sealed envelope so that contamtination of the internal surface of the product pipeline by the exhaust gases does not occur.
