Abstract:Zn-Cr2O3 composite coatings were prepared on mild steel by electroplating from a cyanide-free bath containing ZnO 12 g/L,NaOH 94 g/L,2-amino-3-carboxypyridine 4.2 g/L,tetraethylenepentamine 17 g/L,triethanolamine 2 g/L,proprietary surfactant 0.5 g/L and Cr2O3particles (2 μm in diameter) 0-11 g/L at temperature 50 ℃,pH 6.5,and current density 4 A/dm2.The microhardness of the composite coatings was examined by Vickers tester,the wear resistance by Taber abrasion tester,the surface morphology and microstructure by scanning electron microscopy (SEM),X-ray diffraction (XRD),and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS),and the corrosionresistance by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)in 3.5wt% NaCl solution.The existence of aggregated Cr2O3particles in zinc matrix was confirmed.The Zn-Cr2O3composite coatings exhibit superior mechanical properties and corrosion resistance to zinc coatings.
