Modification of Mesophase Pitch from Petroleum Heavy Oils

Preparation of mesophase pitch from petroleum heavy oil is a new and effective method for the application of petroleum heavy oil. In this review, the authors summarize the recent progresses of mesophase pitch from petroleum heavy oil basically on our recent work, including concept of mesophase in the carbonization science and technology and different modification processes of mesophase pitch, such as simple heat treatment, condensation by catalyst, co carbonization and cross linkage synthesis etc., according to different structures of aromatic feedstocks. In the meantime, the properties and structures on the levels of molecules, the mechanism of mesophase pitch formation, the evaluation of carbon fibers derived from the mesophase pitches are also introduced.
