The Viennese Architect Adolf Loos

Against the often misconceiving of Adolf Loos as a simplified propagandist with some of his wide circulated idioms, this paper sets out to present the multiplicity of the master through an introductory review of his different aspects --- his cultural criticism, his principle of cladding, the notion of Raumplan, and the disjunction of interior and exterior of his architecture. Within such a presentation, the paper also tries to find out the internal relationality between these aspects, while points out that he is primarily a critic of profound thinking and with a firm cultural stand, rather than a mere architect. The paper concludes with the contradiction and complexity inherent in Loos --- a modern pioneer who was deeply rooted in the neo-classic and antiquity. This would be in sharp contrast with the often over-simplified caricature of this Viennese master.
