Abstract: | Questions J. Polivy and C. P. Herman's (see record 1986-01626-001) arguments that dieting causes bingeing (rather than vice versa) and that the degree of overeating during a binge is determined more by cognitive than by physiological factors. Evidence is reviewed that suggests that weight loss may be more important than cognitive factors in determining loss-of-control eating.
