Abstract:High altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) has the characteristics of a wide coverage and high peak field strength, which poses a serious threat to th e electronic devices. But the current HEMP standards include only the general wa ve characteristics in the free space, so the electromagnetic environmental chara cteristics near the ground induced by the double exponential HEMP incident plan e wave perpendicular to the ground are studied in this paper. Based on the finite difference time domain(FDTD) method, the 1-D compound plane wave is proposed, wh ich so lves the introduction of stimulating source. The different incident wave statuse s and environmental factors are set and the electromagnetic environmental parame ters near the ground are simulated. Then, the propagation characteristics and tr e nds of the HEMP near the ground are summarized and concluded. The results show that the reflected field weakens the incident one, which makes the total field d epressed, especially in the lower position over the ground,and almost integer in cid ent and reflected fields occur in the upper position. In addition, the ground el ectrical parameters also affect the total field near the ground, especially the conductivity. The conclusions are helpful to provide guidance for the protection design of electronic devices near the ground.
