Determination of trace elements in ultrafine tungsten carbide by direct current arc atomic emission spectrometry

Abstract:Ultrafine tungsten carbide (WC) is mainly used to produce rod hard alloys. It generally contains 0.1%-1.0% vanadium carbide (VC) or chromium carbide (Cr3C2), which has grain refining effect to enhance the strength of rod alloys. The trace elements in ultrafine tungsten carbide have an important influence on the properties of alloys. Therefore, the establishment of one detection method for the rapid determination of trace elements in ultrafine tungsten carbide has important significance to guild the production. A method for the rapid determination of 16 trace elements in ultrafine tungsten carbide by direct current arc atomic emission spectrometry was established. Through the excitation condition experiments, the following parameters for elements were confirmed: the arcing current was 5 A, the excitation current was 12 A, and the electrode distance was 4 mm. The blank electrode was measured repeatedly. The limits of detection were less than 1 μg/g, and the limit of detection was 1.35 μg/g for As. The internal control standard sample of WO3 was measured. The difference between average value and standard value was less than 1 μg/g, and the difference between two measurements was less than 1.5 μg/g, indicating that the accuracy and repeatability of method could meet the requirements of quality control. The internal control standard sample of ultrafine tungsten carbide was determined for one week. The standard deviations of Fe, Ni, Co, Si, Ca, Ti, Mg, Mn, Al, As, Sb, Bi, Cu, Cd, Pb and Sn were all less than 1 μg/g. The stability of method was good, which could meet the daily analysis requirements of trace elements in tungsten carbide.
