Abstract:Experiments have been done on the effects of intense laser beams on electrons surrounded by dense argon gas. The physical processes involved in these effects are discussed. It is shown that a single initial electron can produce during the few nonoseconds of an intense laser pulse a small swarm of 105 electrons which radiate enough light to be observable. Some attempts to visualize β-ray ionized tracks are described.
