Abstract:Because it is not practical to build as much insulation into rotating equipment, induction motors are more susceptible to damage from lightning and system-induced surges than is stationary equipment. This is, unfortunately, true of submersible pump drive motors, where dimensional constraints further limit the amount of insulation that may be designed into the motor. The transient phenomena to which induction motors are likely to be exposed are addressed and the means for protecting induction motors from the damage such transients can cause are outlined.
