In-fabrication and Pre-service Care on Stainless Steel Pressure Vessels

This paper discusses certain failure cases of austenitic stainless steel pressure vessels and components like dished ends due to improper specifica- tions and inadequate care during fabrication, welding, hydrostatic testing and stor- age of tanks at coastal site. These failures are attributed to various reasons such as residual stress, sensitisation, iron contamination and saline atmosphere. The paper also brings out the precautions to be taken during fabrication, storage and erection of austenitic stainless steel pressure vessels to avoid failures.
