Abstract:As urban development progresses, it is inevitable for historical urban areas to produce new construction demands due to natural environment changes and social functions. The rough intervention of many modern buildings has caused indelible and negative influences on the sustainable development of historic urban areas. This problem is becoming increasingly prominent with faster urban development. The Valletta Principles issued by ICOMOS in 2011 provide guidance for the renewal of historic urban areas to address new problems currently related to sustainable development. Based on the Valletta Principles, a case study based on Xiaodi Culture and Art Museum on the west side of Cantonese Opera Art Museum on Enning Road was undertaken in this study. Research conclusions provide references for architectural practices during future historical urban area renewals. By analysing the Valletta principles and renewal of historical urban areas, the significance of modern architectural elements providing value continuity in historical urban areas was confirmed in this study, following a thorough interpretation of history, culture and protection. Application of the Valetta Principles enabled the renewal idea of value continuation to evolve and then be applied to the architectural practice of Xiaodi culture and the Art Museum. Moreover, continuation was valued from the perspective of value extraction as the focus for renewing China's historic urban areas. Enning Road is the material conservation of the prosperous past of the old city of Xiguan and living memories of Xiguan people's daily lives. The regional commercial agglomeration combined with local natural environmental characteristics has formed an overall spatial pattern that combines small-scale and high-density settlements. It is a material manifestation of the spatial relationship of the communities spawned by Guangzhou's specific urban development model. On the one hand, the spatial layout of the home-garden symbiosis reflects social life in the most prosperous period of Xiguan. On the other hand, it is the historical epitome of Guangzhou development as a millennium ancient business city.    Value elements such as the historical spatial layout and home-garden symbiosis were constructed by analysing the historical development context and site environmental characteristics of Enning Road. For value continuity, the Xiaodi Culture and Art Museum project used the historical spatial layout to supplement the original street and lane scale, spatial rhythm, and cultural ambience to alleviate the predicament of fragmenting Enning Road and ensure the historical integrity of the spatial layout. Additionally, the study used vertical gardens to create spatial resonance with the adjacent Cantonese Opera Art Museum by expanding vertical spaces and borrowing the scenery, thus improving the home-garden symbiosis. Moreover, the intangible cultural heritage workshops are used as a functional supplement to the historical block to stimulate the vitality of traditional folk culture and activate the inherited intangible culture. Maintaining a historical urban area is the carrier of historical memory and the contemporary continuation of its cultural context and spiritual tradition. The renewal of historical urban areas should recognise historical and cultural heritages from a more long-term and holistic perspective. It should be associated with more extensive social needs, thus vitalising the continuity values of the city.
