Abstract: | Nanocrystalline NiAl intermetallic powders were synthesized by mechanical alloying (MA) in a planetary ball mill. Microstructural characterization was accomplished using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The nanocrystalline NiAl powders were formed by a gradual exothermic reaction mechanism during MA. Prolonged milling resulted in partial martensitic transformation of B2-NiAl to tetragonal L10-NiAl structure. It is believed that the martensitic transformation is induced by mechanical stress during MA. |
