Structure development of Biofront (PLA) in fiber making process and its applications

Abstract:Although bioplastics have attracted much attention due to their environmentally friendly nature, polyactide and other bioplastics currently on the market do not offer the same level of perfromance as oil-based plastics in terms of heat and shock resistance. Accordingly, the use of bioplastics has been limited so far. Teijin Ltd. developed the new heat-resistant bioplastic Biofront, which consists of poly L-lactic acid (PLLA) and its enantiomer poly D-lactic and (PDLA). It was previously known that the crystal of high melting point, said stereocomplex (SC) , is formed by mixing equal parts of PLLA and PDLA at melting state. Formation of the SC crystal, however, is unstable and it is formed only under limited condition. Biofront is improved to be able to achieve entire formation of the SC crystal stably. It has a melting point of 210℃, or 40℃ higher than that of polylacited. In fiber formation of Biofront, Teijin Fibers Ltd. , Ehime/Japan, tried to control properly to form the SC crystal in fiber making process, and established necessary basic technologies, which satisfied both high heat resistance by entire SC crystallization, and equal level of fiber mechanical properties to general-purpose synthetic fibers, that could not be achieved by existing plant based fibers.
