Abstract:Safety is a major concern of the large-scale application of lithium-ion batteries. The safety performance of lithium-ion batteries not only depends on materials and cell design, but would also changes during aging process. The effects of aging on the battery safety performance require further investigation to ensure the full-life cycle safety of lithium-ion batteries. This paper has reviewed the recent progress on the evolution of battery safety performance under different aging conditions (including cycling and storage). The correlations between aging mechanisms and the changes of battery safety performance are further summarized. Lithium plating on anode surface is found to be the key factor of full-life cycle safety of lithium-ion batteries. Furthermore, the problems and future researches on the evolution of battery safety performance are discussed.
Keywords:lithium-ion battery  battery safety  battery degradation  thermal runaway  full-life cycle
