Abstract: | The new Meteor metro line in Paris is forging a new relationship between the underground Metro system and the City on the surface. The author traces the development of the Paris metro and examines the current situation with regard to its underground transportation network. The paper presents arguments for enhancing the underground environment as a specific space; extending the principles of surface layout to the underground development; and expanding opportunities for commercial activities and provision of services in underground space. The Meteor project has given the City and transport authorities a way to work together to ensure the optimal means of designing large underground public spaces. |
