Research on the Headstream and Development of Gable Walls in Lingnan Traditional Buildings

In terms of either the quantity or the distribution area, gable wall is one of the most popular architectural forms among Chinese traditional buildings. As a part of the gable wall, fire-sealing gable not only has single function of fire prevention, influenced by diverse local environment. It also plays important roles in wind prevention, shading and defense. The appearance and wide application of gable wall and fire-sealing gable reflects series changes of society, economy and environment during that era. Through studying the headstream and development of gable walls, the flexibility and adoptabflity of Lingnan traditional buildings towards their local environment can be explored thoroughly, and it also helps to learn the ancient wisdom of integrating function, form and arts harmoniously.
