Tensile deformation of regenerated and native cellulose fibres

The tensile deformation of well-oriented cellulose fibres has been reexamined. It is demonstrated that not only the fibre structure but also the deformation mechanism is similar to that found in high performance aramid fibres. An explanation is proposed for the difference between the elastic moduli of cellulose I and II. In view of these results it is possible to assess the prospect for improving the mechanical properties of cellulose fibres.
