Experimental study on shear performance of high-strength bolted connections fabricated from high-performance fire-resistant steel at elevated temperature

Abstract:To facilitate the design theory improvement and engineering practice of high-performance fire-resistant steel, the shear performance of ten bolted joints fabricated with different types of high-strength bolts was tested under different temperature conditions, including four specimens using ordinary high-strength bolts and six specimens using BFRW10 high-strength fire-resistant bolts. The connection plates were manufactured from WGJ high-performance fire-resistant steel. The friction coefficients at room temperature, load-displacement relation, resistance reduction factor and failure mode of the bolted connections under different temperature were investigated. It is found that with the increasing temperature, the failure mode of the bolted connections changes from compressive failure on the bolt hole to shear failure of the bolt rod.The slip load and ultimate load of the bolted connections fabricated from fire-resistant high-strength bolts are larger than those of ordinary high-strength bolts at high temperatures. The experimental ultimate loads are compared with the calculation results from EC3 method and strength-reduction method of high-strength bolted joint in high temperature, which show over conservative of current codes in predicting the ultimate load of such fire-resistant bolted joints. Meanwhile, suggestions were made to establish overall reduction factors for such connections in further discussions.
