Abstract:Self-centering structures aim at decreasing post-earthquake residual drift to provide fast post-earthquake structural restoring capacity. The combination of self-centering system with glulam post-and-beam structures is one of the solutions to improve the resilience of timber structures. This study presented a design method for self-centering glulam post-and-beam connections and evaluated the seismic performance of self-centering structures. Firstly, quasi-static cyclic loading tests were performed on two different self-centering connections. One of the connections used specialized steel cap as the energy dissipator, while the other had no dissipators. Then, based on the test results, a design procedure was proposed and a 3-story self-centering glulam post-and beam structure prototype was designed. The corresponding simplified numerical model was developed within the OpenSees framework. Finally, nonlinear time history analysis was performed to verify the design procedure and a series of fragility curves were generated based on the nonlinear time history analytical results. The fragility analysis shows that the residual inter-story drift of the self-centering structures decreases significantly compared with conventional glulam structures.
