Dicing with Deception: People with Disabilities' Strategies for Managing Safety and Identity Online

Affiliation:Received his M.A. and Ph.D. in philosophy from the Pennsylvania State University. Ess has received awards for teaching excellence and scholarship, and a national award for his work in hypermedia. He has published in comparative and applied ethics, history of philosophy, feminist biblical studies, and interdisciplinary approaches to Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC), including two edited volumes for SUNY Press, most recently, with Fay Sudweeks, Culture, Technology, Communication: Towards an Intercultural Global Village;(2001). Ess has authored and edited several publications on Internet research ethics, and chairs the ethics working committee of the Association of Internet Researchers (), whose report on ethical guidelines and decision-making procedures for Internet researchers was recently endorsed by AoIR. Senior Lecturer in Information Systems at Murdoch University, Australia, and teaches Organizational Informatics and Internet Studies. She received a Bachelor degree (Psychology and Sociology) and a Master's (Cognitive Science) degree from the University of New South Wales. Her current research interests are social, cultural and economic aspects of computer-mediated communication and CSCW, group dynamics, and e-commerce. She has published more than a dozen edited books and proceedings, and 50 papers in journals, books and conference proceedings. She is on the editorial board of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication;, New Media and Society, WebNet Journal, Journal of Electronic Commerce Research, and Journal of Electronic Commerce in Organizations. She has given lectures in Israel, Sweden, Russia, South Africa, Turkey and Germany.
Abstract:In the global struggle over discourse and knowledge after 9/11, the voices of otherwise silenced women in Afghanistan were significantly amplified on the Internet. RAWA.org demonstrates how a Web site contended with discourses of fundamentalism and war while envisioning democracy and constructing new leadership identities for women.
