Some results of the interplay between computer graphics and mathematics

We show that computer graphics supports and visualizes mathematical research in the differential geometry of immersions and embeddings of surfaces in the three-dimensional space. Emphasis lies on the close connection between the mathematical questions, numerical approximations, and graphical investigations of surfaces which emerge from extremality principles, such as minimal surfaces.
