Abstract: | Comments on the article by Renner (see record 2007-09069-001), in which he seems to make the argument that the university is going to starve to death if levels of financing continue to decline, so universities should offer staff ways of getting away before the ship goes down completely. What universities must do as a first task, is to find a new base upon which to operate, one that will restore the undergraduate degree to a position of high value. If we do, this society will continue to support a cadre of people who bring students into touch with the lead-edge of intellectual currents within a relatively confined organic structure.
