| Abstract: | The transient response of a synchronous machine connected to a large system can be improved by the insertion of fast-acting phase shift. The concept is described in simple terms using the equal-area criterion and by computed results using a typical mathematical model. A strategy is then outlined to minimise the system disturbance. |
