Effect of machine saliency on overvoltages caused by the opening of a conductor

In this paper a new method is applied to predict overvoltages on power systems during the opening of a conductor. The effects of machine saliency and transmission line capacitances are the main objects of this study. The method of prediction is fully explained for the case of one synchronous machine connected by a transmission system to a very large power system which can be assumed to be an infinite system. The machine can be considered as equivalent to a group of machines connected to a common bus. Overvoltages on an open line are calculated in a numerical example.
