Abstract:A new synthetic model ice, DUT 1 model ice, was developed. This paper describes the procedures for making the model ice and details its ingredients, grain size distribution, structure, density and elastic modulus. Based on its measured density, DUT 1 model ice has steady mechanical properties and is stable for sufficiently long period to perform ice modeling tests. The relationships of the measured elastic modulus with water amount and density were worked out.
