Abstract:We have observed the icosahedral quasicrystals in the Zn- and rare earths-containing Mg alloys. The quasicrystals in these alloys contains Mg, Zn and rare earths elements. Three crystal phases, i.e. W phase, W′ phase and MgZn2-type Laves phase, coexist with the quasicrystals in this kind of alloys. XRD analysis suggest that the quasicrystals in experimental alloys may have the same structure but different compositions to those in the Mg-Al-Zn 5] and Ga-Mg-Zn 6] alloys.
