Energy worldviews: Engaging consumers by aligning rate design strategies with personal choice

Abstract:Rate design serves objectives of cost recovery, market animation, and customer incentives. Yet in the quest to find the ‘perfect equitable rate,’ many rate designers and pilots overlook the diversity of consumer attitudes. AMI enables not only interval monitoring and controls, it allows alternative pricing plans, payment options, device adoption, and generation mixes reflecting individual priorities. Connecting consumer attitudes with a portfolio approach helps regulators and utilities achieve specific goals while improving satisfaction and engagement.
