Structure and mechanical properties of rapidly solidified Al-(Fe,Cr) and Al-Mg-(Fe,Cr) alloys

For Al-(Fe,Cr) and Al-Mg-(Fe,Cr), by employing a combination of X-ray diffraction, metallography and transmission electron microscopy, detailed understanding of microstructural transformations that occur during rapid solidification and consolidation has been achieved. A major decrease in the solid solubility extension of Fe in an Al-Mg system with an increase of Mg concentration has been found. The decrease in solubility of Fe results in the reduction of strength and hardness of the Al-Mg-Fe alloys in comparison with Al-Mg-Cr alloys.
